LA
Jungle vallisneria, Vallisneria americana, easily grows two feet long in good light.
Trim off any unsightly leaves.
LA
Jungle vallisneria grows to the top of this 37H. It will arch over the top
of the tank. It will fill in this entire area.
LA
Jungle val with bloom stalks in a 55. Fifty or so jungle vals will
fill a 55 from day one.
LA
More jungle val in a 55. Plant in patches rather than rows. Plant
three to four inches apart to allow room for reproduction. The
individual plants also grow wider as they add new leaves.
LA
Corkscrew val works better in a 10. It usually tops out at 12 to 14 inches.
Plant two or three inches apart if you like dense plantings. It will
grow faster if you plant it further apart. It gets more light and
more root room when spaced out. All the vals are fast growers and
like water changes. Fertilizers also help. Fertilizing with
small amounts on a frequent basis.
LA
Grassy plants grow best in smaller gravels. Their roots get a better
grip in BB-size gravels. You can decide your own gravel color.
LA
Fifty contortion val, Vallisneria asiatica, fresh from a Florida plant ranch.
LA
Contortion val will grow to the top of a 55 in good light. Use a
single-edged razor blade to shave off that furry algae on the back
wall. Black backgrounds look more natural than blue backgrounds.
LA
Contortion val will also grow to the top of a 55. Angels love
it. Different 55 with different gravel. Val grows better in
smaller gravel. Medium gravel still works.
LA
If you see val or any other plant this badly off, pass it up.
LA
But if you see some neat looking contortion val, grab it now.
LA
Unplanted micro-swords (Lilaeopsis novaezelandiae) -- really more of a grassy plant.
Micro-sword grows low and slow.
LA
Planted here. Looks more grassy than swordy.
LA
Octopus plants (also called quillwort), Isoetes species, another slow
grower, grows wild in the U.S. In the wild, it reproduces by
spores. In aquaria, you can split up the little corms and spread
them out like chives.
LA
Do not plant them too deeply.
