Q:  Why did your site go down?

A:  I switched ISPs at the end of June.  I was not educated enough to do the switch myself.  I had to bring in an IT expert from out of town, my son Robert in KC.  It took him about a day and a half to fix it.  LA

Liam Smale, July 3, 2007
Hi, just wondering what's happened to the website? I'm quite lost. I used to get a lot of my information from the site. I used to love all the pics
swell =D! Please get back to me, Liam.

A:  We're up and swinging.  LA

So I went to my LFS today, and I bought the impossible (haha). I bought myself a Blue Jack Dempsey, and he's less than an inch as of right now. He's in my 38-gallon with all my other fish and seems to be adapting very well. He's finding all my caves very well and gets along with my ram pretty well too. I remembered a while back I asked you about them and what you knew and you told me how expensive they were. I saw them in other LFSs for around 30 bucks, sometimes 40! I went to my buddy's LFS and honest to god, scored one for 15 bucks. They get them in about once a month and are all the same price. I'm pretty shocked they sell them so cheap since they are a sort of rare fish. Well, I just wanted to share that little tidbit with you and I attached a photo of him with this message. Have a good night!

A:  That is an excellent price.  Buy more.  Remember to treat him like the baby fish he is  LA

What's going on with the website, Larry? I haven't been able to access it for 4 or 5 days. Thanks.

A:  I couldn't access it for two weeks.  It's up again.  LA

Good Day, I currently have a 55 GL aquarium.  I hope to move up to a larger tank sometime in the near future, but I'd really like to get my current tank and inhabitants established before I do that so I can decide exactly how large of a tank I want to get.  I really like unusual fish that can cohabitate in a community tank.  I currently have 2 Weather Loaches, 2 Golden Loaches, 2 Peacock Eels, 12 Congo's (long finned), 6 Balloon Mollies, 3 Florida Sand Darters, 1 Albino Cory Catfish, 1 Pleco, 1 Betta, 1 African Butterfly, 1 Horse-Face Loach and I currently have an Elephant Nose Fish on order that I'll pick up next week.
Unfortunately, my favorite fish store stopped carrying freshwater fish, so I've lost my best source of good quality fish.  I'm currently trying to find a local source or someone who can import a fish that appears to be rare to get. the Vaillantella maassi a.k.a. Fork-Tail Loach.  Please see information on this fish at http://www.loaches.com/species-index/vaillantella-maassi  I only want to purchase one Fork-Tail Loach since they appear to be territorial against others of their own species.  Please see the following video: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=7942878761081918945
Can you advise me of a possible contact in order to find someone who can supply me with one of these fish?
In addition, I'm interested in the possibility of getting a Knifefish.  I read about the Xenomystus nigri on your website and it seems like a possible candidate to add to my aquarium especially since it doesn't get as large as the other species of knifefish.  (Xenomystus nigri (Gunther 1868), the African Knifefish. Western Africa. To eight inches maximum length. Vies with the Clown Knife as most popular aquarium species of the family. Easy going, intelligent addition to peaceful tanks.)  Can you advise if you think this fish will get along with my other fish, especially the elephant nose fish, or not.  If I can add a Xenomystus nigri knifefish to my stock, is it best to get just one or should I get 2 or 3 of them.  I just don't want them to bully around my other fish or eat them.
Also, I'd also like to find some nice looking Killifish too. I would appreciate any information you may have to offer.
Thank you for your time. Sincerely,

A:  I really can't help you on Florida freshwater retail sources.  I've been to parts of Florida -- mainly fish farms and fish association meetings.  However, there must be more than one good source of freshwater fish within commuter distance.
If you decide to go with the African knives, they do best in schools.
I have trouble getting killies at a decent price myself.  Almost the only way to get good killifish sources is to join the American Killifish Association.  You'll find species there you only see in books.  LA

Wiliam Tam, Markham, Ontario, July 8, 2007
Hello, Do you carry the Albino Red Lyretail High Fin or just the Albino High Fin Lyretail Swordtail? Please forward me price per and some info. I would like to purchase a few. Thank you.

A:  When I order hi-fin, lyre-tail swordtails, my source sends me an assortment of colors.  I don't believe I've ever seen the color (or colour)you're looking for in real life.  I've seen close to your description in Atlas of Livebearers of the World by Lothar Wischnath.  In any event, we don't ship fish.  You might find it worthwhile to join the American Livebearer Association.  LA

Dianna L. Miller, Montana, July 9, 2007
What happened to your website? I tried all weekend to get on and it seems to be down. Are you having technical problems or just doing maintenance?
Thank you. I really enjoy all the information and pictures that you present. It's  an excellent site!!

A:  It's up again.  LA

Justin Kaczmarczyk, July 9, 2007
Hello again, I have some questions about Mississippi map turtles. I have 2 of them and they recently have both been giving off a lot of oil. There is a decent size difference between the two (one is almost three years old, the other will be one soon.) I have on previous occasions put the turtles together in the same tank and the larger one would be scared of the smaller one. But when the turtles started giving off oils, I stopped putting them together for a while. The larger turtle's oil did not smell at all but the small turtle's smelled very bad. I checked for any signs of sickness and there were none.
I cleaned the oil up later. It had not been prevalent so I decided to put the two turtles together again for a few minutes. To my surprise, the older turtle was trying to mate with the younger turtle (which makes it so I finally know the gender of the older turtle. I hope the smaller one is female) but I heard that turtles take an extremely long time to mature fully. Also when I grabbed the older turtle to prevent any "actions," he hissed vigorously at me.
My questions are, is the oil just a sign that it is just that time of the year for turtles? How old do they have to be to be successful? If they are successful, where do they prefer to lay their eggs? Will the large turtle hold a grudge against me? I know this one seems silly, but do turtles  mate for reasons other then to reproduce? This may seem sillier but can a turtle be homophobic (if so, this leaves the question of the gender of the smaller turtle in question as well)
Please answer these questions for me, since in the future they may have eggs together but I do not think they are old enough to have any.

A:  I've never bred the map turtles, so I'm not sure what the "oil" is.  I would suspect it's from their food.  Water turtles dig holes and lay their eggs in the sand.  They take months to hatch.  The male will not hold a grudge longer than his next meal.  Turtles are not homophobic.  They could probably mate successfully at age three.  LA

Is something wrong with the Aqualand website? For the past 2 days, I've tried to go there (homepage) to get the infusoria article for someone and it won't work. It just comes up with a total blank page that says "New Page 1" as the title.

A:  There was.  It works fine now.  Call me if you want to get some hours the next ten days.  LA

BOB, Virginia, July 10, 2007
Yayyyy!!! Your web site is back!!!!! Well, almost. Click Me Some links aren't working yet but then again, you do have a huge amount of information and progress is being made.
The speed with your new server is FAST!!!! It's way faster than the old one. Those guys were getting pokey.
Thanks for keeping this site on the WWW and if you need small donations to help keep this going then I'm first in line!

A:  For about 10 days I thought I'd lost the whole thing.  It came up faster for you than it did for me.  I couldn't input anything past Oddballs, Moray Eels.  But my son cured it.  The new site is not only faster, it's also cheaper (by a lot).  Robert's working on making it even faster -- especially in the creation of new pages.  LA

Frank X. Casavant II, Heidenheimer, TX, July 10, 2007
Hi there, was a doing a search on gold mystery snails laying eggs and came across your site. Nice content, did you write all these articles and content yourself or are you doing some rss to blog feeds. Reason I am asking as I am in the process of starting up a blog for woodworking and I am looking for ideas to get it kick started. Thank You,

A:  I wrote all of them except for three or four.  I have no clue as to what "rrs to blog feeds" means.  LA

S. Vincent, July 10, 2007
Has your server imploded again? If so, I'm very sorry to hear that. If
not, you may want to check because something's not right with the
page. I'm getting  a lot of 404 Page Not Found errors.

A:  I'm happy to report that everything is now unimploded.  LA

Hallo there, I was browsing the internet looking for something on “scats” or related brackish water fish when I came across a link to your website. I enjoyed your articles on the brackish water fish and the information & advice & facts given are correct.
I have taken the fish keeping hobby to an advanced stage with quite a few species aquariums, one of which is a brackish set-up too. I am enclosing some photographs of my rigging. On photo 0388.JPG my girlfriend is standing next to the aquarium, she is 1.78m tall, to give you an idea of the size of this set-up. The tank holds +385 litres, not sure how many gallons that is. The pH is at a constant 7.6 and I do water changes every second week. Cheers,
PS Where in the States are you guys?

JM

JM

A:  Nice pics and setup.  Adding the hint "South Africa (Southern tip of African continent)" on your email was funny.  I even remember when it was called Suid Afrika.
PS  We're in the Midwest -- quite a ways from the Mid East.  More specifically, we're 330 miles west of Chicago.
PPS  It was a pleasure to get a message from Africa which was not from Nigeria or the Ivory Coast.

You don't ship critters or live fish but ... how
about moss balls?  And what do you charge for the balls and shipping if you do, to Arizona? If you need a zip code 85635.

A:  I might be able to send you a moss ball or two.  Things are a bit hectic right now (not just the website catch-up), so send me a follow up in three or four weeks.  LA

Pickle Yakboy, Haltom City, TX, July 11, 2007
Hi, I was wondering a few things but why does it say on the guppies to cull the fast growers and not put them into a ten gallon with other fast growers? I was also wondering why the site shut down, and why it says that the bigger the female the more babies she eats, if you leave her in a tank with a few other adult guppies and let them all spawn they will eventually get the idea not to eat them. I even got my Japanese blue guppy male and my blonde tux female to leave them alone. They are in a 5 gallon tank. As of right now I have 3 new borns that pick on the adults and they just ignore them, but with the misfits/early growers I created a strain of guppy with a heart shaped tail as well as my Japanese blue guppy, but some stayed misfits like my marble molly it looks like a fricken frankenstien.

A:  That's Frankenstein (pronounced steen only by Gene wilder).  Our guppy page actually says cull out the runts.  Bigger females have larger stomachs and thus larger appetites.  They don't get the idea not to eat them, they get full.  You need larger tanks to rear guppies in quantity (and quality).  Put some gups in a child's wading pool and you'll see the difference quick.  Three newborns means you're having a 10% survival rate.  In the wading pool, you'll get 30 to 50 survivors per litter.  LA

Marcia Grant, Ankeny, IA, July 12, 2007
Can you order me a cat litter container with a plant on top?  I've seen them in catalogs and could probably find an ad for one somewhere.  Do you have a catalog for me to check out such things. I think they would make a good addition to all your crap, no I mean stuff, no I mean "specialty items."

A:  Of course, if this is the same Marcia I used to live with.  LA

Frank X. Casavant II, Heidenheimer, TX, July 12, 2007
Hey Larry, Man my snails have gone wild, I had 4 patches of eggs yesterday, and then this morning I had three more, there in an old hot tub out in back of my cabin. I use it as a holding tank while I am working on the big pond out in front which is about 2000 gallons. I have a couple of Koi and big Comets and fantails in there now.  I noticed the fiberglass sides of the hot tub get really hot so in fear of having hard-boiled snails eggs I put some old barn boards across the top to give them some shade.  Your relative content and your work is impressive on your site. I have a buddy who I just set up a Word Press blog for that I told him about your site as an example. I told him to just write, write and write again (he is into kayaks, outdoor stuff) every day about something. And yea it might take 6 months to a year but then you will have relative content that can be indexed like your site. You were like number one or two on Google for my search phrase. Oh yeah the rss feed's just something I stumbled across in the seo-blog forums. I have not figured it out yet. It is hard to keep up with technology, but one thing will always be a constant and that is good relative content, good work. Thank you,

A:  Happy snailing.  LA

Dianna L. Miller, Montana, July 12, 2007
Wonderful! Thanks for letting me know. I really rely on your site for all my fish info. I have a 12 gallon tank with some pretty strong personalities in it (a cranky flame gourami, an aggressive butterfly pleco, 2 banjo cats and a cory cat). I want to put a couple of rams in there, but wasn't sure if that was a good idea or not.

A:  Go with the rams.  And add more info sources.  LA

BOB, Virginia, July 12, 2007
Glad U worked out the bugs! You have a talented son there, that's for sure. My page downloads are fast because of my broadband connection, but even with that the pages used to load kinda slow towards the end. This new deal for you is much faster (cheaper too?)
Wow! It's well worth the money! Glad you didn't lose your site. You should be able to back up the whole thing on your computer. When you upload, it should be just a copy with stuff remaining on your computer. I remember you saying that you have a hard drive now with a huge amount of storage. Consider buying another (either internal or external) for a backup. You can use it for just raw storage or make it a bootable hard drive with XP or Ubuntu on it. http://www.ubuntu.com/
Nice tomato garden you have posted on you site. Here's mine.

BOB

Corn is on the left and tomatoes on the right. This area used to be a swimming pool and we filled it in. Too much insurance liability.

A:  I put the bugs in.  Robert took them out.  I'm more used to seeing corn by the square mile.  LA

Efrem Jose Cedillo, July 12, 2007
Hi, I am in search of Dwarf Water Dogs, mudpuppies, and hellbenders. Can any of these be sold by you guys these days. I am looking for sirens too and any rare fully aquatic salamanders. Thanks and any info will be greatly appreciated.

A:  The availability of aquatic U.S. salamanders (at least the ones you mentioned) is hugely less than it was decades ago.  Around here their habitat has crappy looking three-story town houses built upon it.  It's hard to find a good swamp in our environs.  Probably the same has happened around the country.  LA

Kathy Sieloff, AZ, July 13, 2007
Hi there! I live in the Southwest, the Sonoran Desert to be exact.  My question is about the tarantula hawk, and tarantulas.  Do you know if a tarantula will eventually recover from a sting from the tarantula hawk, if the tarantula hawk was not successful in entombing the tarantula and laying its egg on it? I know, crazy question, but what if the entire cycle does not get completed?  Has anyone ever found out???

Pic from Chuck Holliday

A:  In our neck of the woods, we have the similar "cicada killer wasps" -- probably because we have lots of cicadas (which we call locusts) and zero tarantulas.  Those and bumblebees at one time or another have populated my front yard.  A little bit of gasoline from the lawn mower gas can (applied at night) will eradicate them.  Thus ends my knowledge of the tarantula hawk wasps.  But I really doubt a tarantula could recover from the sting -- especially if the wasp inserts her egg.  LA

Stephni Libby, Ogden, UT, July 14, 2007
Hello.  I love your site.  We are hosts to several fish and a few snakes so I find this site truly a god-send when my sons bring home more houseguests.  LOL
My question is probably quite simple to answer.  We have just acquired a dragon goby and it has set up shop quite nicely with the pleasant blue gourami and the albino cory cat.  Upon further study of new fish, we find that it needs a bit of salt (not even mentioned at fish store).  Should we set up a separate tank (not my preference) or can we add aquarium salt to our 5.5 hex tank without harming all occupants?
Thank you so much for your time.

A:  Add a teaspoon of salt per gallon.  They should all do fine.  LA

Rev.Richmond Cyril, July 14, 2007
Dear Sir/Madam, I want to know  if you do carry Fish Tanks for Aquarium for sale. If yes, kindly  quote to me the types and also the prices without installation. Kindly advise me on the forms of payments that you do accept.
Regards

A:  Sorry but we do not ship.  Very few places will ship aquariums.  LA

Garrett Rauckhorst, Ohio, July 15, 2007
Hey LA,
As you already know because everyone tells you, you have the best website ever created. Anyway my cousin and I are planning on growing a bullhead to 19+ inches to break the Ohio State Record bullhead, which is currently 18.5 inches. We netted Goto at less then an inch long in the summer of 2005. We recently moved him from my cousin's 55 to my 200, which we only keep 3/4 full so it is really more like a 150. He is now about a foot long. How realistic is our goal of 19 inches? Is that even possible? Is there anything we could do to increase our chances of success?

A:  "Certified state record fish must be legally caught using an active hook-and-line method (including a proper license or exemption) by sport fishing methods, identified by a Commission biologist and weighed on a certified scale. Uncertified state records (indicated below by an asterisk) are believed accurate based on reliable witnesses and other evidence but are not certifiable, or they were caught by other than legal sport fishing methods. To set a new record, you just need to exceed the certified records; the uncertified records are provided just for information."
Now that you know what you desire will not count, here's how to make your bullhead grow larger.  Feed lightly five times per day.  Vary his diet.  Change half his water twice a week.  LA
PS  It would be quicker to go down to Florida and seine some out.  Bullheads grow larger down south.
